Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

The album artwork is the most iconic part of the front cover of this digipak. It shows an image of a swimming pool and a sky reversed, showing a very abstract use of imagery. The conceptual unrealistic use of imagery links to the album title - californication, which refers to how people change and adapt according to the influence of a Hollywood lifestyle in order to achieve Californian dreams. The use of complimentary colours makes the album cover more visually appealing and attractive to the audience's eye. It's unusual for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to use such bright colours as indie rock bands are usually associated with themes of darkness. This therefore shows the band taking a unique and original approach. The band's name and album title are in a small, basic, white, sans serif font. This is so the focus is solely on the artwork and the message of the front cover, however the band and title still appear first in the line of vision so they are not completely hidden.

For the inside of the digipak, the disk shows very minimalistic artwork. The colour red is used, showing an association to the band's name by representing the colour of chilli peppers. The disk shows the band name and album title in the same font used on the front cover, showing continuity. It also states the song titles in the same basic style font, showing no connotations. Overall the disk is very minimalistic, showing the band's main focus is on what the audience first see; the front and back cover of the digipak.

The back cover shows similar artwork to the front cover as it uses sky imagery, however in a vivid purple colour. This shows both continuity and non-contuity throughout the digipak. A handwritten style white font is used for the track listing place in the centre of the back cover, taking up the majority of the audiences line of vision, highlighting that this is the most important part. No images of the band are used anywhere on the digipak, showing that they see their music to be of great importance and endeavour for it to be the sole focus of their album. One unusual thing that seems to stand out about the back cover is the placing of the barcode oppose to the institution information, copyright information etc. All of this is usually kept together, and at the bottom of the cover more often than not, however on this digipak the barcode is placed in the top right hand corner and stands out quite vividly. This is not the kind of look I would go for in my own work, as it withholds quite an unprofessional feel.
