Types of Music Videos
PERFORMANCE
A perfomance music video involves the band or artist perfoming to the camera in order to showcase their musical talent and ability. It is very rare that the music video will relate to the lyrics, as the main intention will be to put forward a representation of the artist/band; rockbands favour this type of video. Artists renound for using this type of music video include U2, the Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons and The Arctic Monkeys. Examples of Perfomance Music Videos are shown below.
The 1975 - "Love Me"
Ed Sheeran - "One"
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?"
NARRATIVE
A narrative music video tells a story to match the lyrics of the song. The video will either use the artist and/or actors to tell the story. This is a good type of music video if the song wants to have a great effect on the audience. This tends to be popular within the pop genre, and is used by artists such as Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran and Britney Spears. Examples of narrative music videos are shown below.
Jamie Lawson - "Wasn't Expecting That"
Sam Smith - "I'm Not The Only One"
Taylor Swift - "Love Story"
CONCEPTUAL
A conceptual music video is usually based around a single concept or idea that uses unusual editing techniques. This type of music video will more than likely not show the band or artist as much as a performance or narrative video. Using a unique way of editing allows the video to stand out from others, and brings something new to the world of music videos. Coldplay and Oasis are renound for their use of conceptual videos for their music. Examples of Conceptual Music Videos are shown below.
Coldplay - "The Scientist"
Sia - "Breathe Me"
Duke Dumont - "I Got U"
HYBRID
A hybrid music video combines the elements of a narrative, perfomance, or conceptual video. The combination of two or more of the types of music videos creates individuality and originality. Examples of Hybrid Music Videos are shown below.
